Moorumbina Mongurnallin (which means “you are loved” in the Bunurong language) is a unique housing project developed by Kids Under Cover that was designed to provide support and accommodation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people aged 18-21.
The village consists of six modular units built using sustainable and innovative materials, including Durra Panel for the internal walls and ceilings. These natural panels contribute to a healthier biophilic indoor environment with no VOC’s, thermal performance that evens out day and night temperatures and offering soundproofing benefits, aligning with the project’s focus on well-being and sustainability.
The village’s design centers around providing a homely, nurturing environment rather than an institutional one. Developed with input from local youth, Moorumbina Mongurnallin features separate units arranged in a circle around a communal fire pit, reflecting the feedback that young people wanted a space that feels welcoming and comfortable, not like a hotel. This thoughtful design helps create a sense of community and belonging.
In addition to the living units, the village includes a communal dining and living space, a basketball court, and a yarning circle to foster connection and cultural practices. Two on-site mentors and a dedicated case manager will offer support to the six residents, equipping them with life skills to transition to independent living.
The interior of the village also embraces Aboriginal culture, with carpets designed by a local Aboriginal artist. The village’s combination of practical support, cultural inclusivity, and a natural environment makes it an empowering space for young residents to grow and thrive.
Thank you to all the teams we worked with on this amazing project!
